After Toy Story 5, classic Toy Story games are getting re-released

Ahead of Toy Story 5’s release, Disney, Atari, and Digital Eclipse have announced that they are bringing back several classic Toy Story video games. This will come in the form of two separate games: Toy Story: Retro Roundup! and Toy Story 3 Complete Edition.

As its name implies, Toy Story: Retro Roundup! is a collection of classic Pixar games. Specifically, 1995’s Toy Story, 1998’s A Bug’s Life, 1999’s Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue, 2000’s Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and 2001’s Toy Story Racer are included. While some of these are available through the PlayStation Plus Classics catalog, it’s the first time many of them are being made available on PC and modern Nintendo and Xbox platforms.

While many of those games were released across multiple platforms, Digital Eclipse has not yet confirmed which specific versions of each title are in the collection. The collected games were “originally released across PlayStation, SNES, Game Boy and other platforms,” the developer said in a news release. I’d expect Toy Story: Retro Roundup! to be as thorough as Digital Eclipse’s The Disney Afternoon Collection and Disney Classic Games Collection, though. Generally, Digital Eclipse has a fantastic reputation with game collections; check out Atari 50 if you’re worried.

The Toy Story collection will include the following features, according to Digital Eclipse:

  • Rewind and retry instantly: Roll back gameplay to retry difficult sections without restarting.
  • Save and load anytime: Pick up and play exactly where you left off, and save progress when needed.
  • Customize gameplay experience with Rex’s Cheat Code: Use Rex’s cheat codes to immediately unlock characters, levels, and bonus play modes including invincibility and unlimited lives.
  • Learn with Practice Mode: Learn how to play by watching guided playthroughs or playing in practice mode.
  • Modernized “How to Play” guides: Get straight to the action with simplified, fully localized instructions adapted for modern systems.
  • Enhanced visuals with classic options: Play in upgraded, high resolution that brings the original look to life, or switch to the original PlayStation 1 presentation for a nostalgic feel.

Meanwhile, 2010’s Toy Story 3 tie-in game is getting a dedicated remaster. It’s a cult-classic licensed game, mainly due to its Toy Box mode that served as an open-ended sandbox precursor to the Disney Infinity toys-to-life series. Toy Story 3 Complete Edition simply gives it the upscaled remaster treatment for current-generation consoles, and includes the following features.

  • Relive the adventure in Story Mode: Journey through locations, from Andy’s Room to Sunnyside Daycare, as Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie embark on an action-packed adventure.
  • Dynamic gameplay with co-op and character swapping: Switch characters on the fly to use each character’s unique abilities to overcome challenges. Team up with a friend in a local co-op.
  • Explore, create, and play in Toy Box Mode: Step into a vibrant Wild West town inspired by Woody’s Roundup. Take on missions, unlock new content, and complete rewarding missions.
  • Fun for all ages: Accessible controls, light platforming and open-ended gameplay provide a creative, low-pressure experience for new players, while still offering depth and charm for longtime fans.
  • Enhancements: Up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on supported platforms.

Toy Story 5 will arrive in theaters on June 19, but don’t expect these re-releases to launch so soon. Both Toy Story: Retro Roundup and Toy Story 3 Complete Edition will be released on Oct. 15 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Digitally, the games will be released separately, but a two-in-one physical release that contains both is in the works.
