May 26, 2026 is a loaded date for Grand Theft Auto fans. At one point, it was supposed to be the release date for Grand Theft Auto 6. Ahead of the company’s annual earnings call last week, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed the game is on track to launch on Nov. 19. Today’s date has prompted fans on social media to reflect on the long, long wait for the sequel — and share their hopes for the final product.
Over on the GTA 6 subreddit, there are multiple posts with memes about midnight releases, “the night before nothing,” and folks claiming to be annoyed by the inevitable deluge of “we would have played it today” posts. Other fans are bringing “girl who is going to be okay” energy to the conversation, using the occasion as a jumping-off point to discuss the final touches Rockstar may currently be working on.
“In my opinion the game has been ready since the end of 2025 but they want the game to be as perfect as possible. I think they’re just doing extreme polishing to ensure the game comes out as perfect as possible,” one commenter speculated. “I’d hope so, but Rockstar is notorious for crunch, and I would guess scope creep plays a role into that,” noted another.
Crunch refers to implicit and/or explicit mandates for developers to work nights and weekends in order to hit a deadline, and it has been a significant issue for Rockstar Games in the past. Just days before the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 back in 2018, Kotaku published a scathing report on the grueling work culture at Rockstar, featuring commentary and interviews with dozens of current and former studio employees. The report prompted widespread criticism of practices that led to people working extensive overtime, prompting senior management to enact new policies to ensure employees had a more sustainable work-life balance.
Tensions between Rockstar staff and senior management resurfaced in November 2025, when dozens of U.K.-based workers claimed they were fired for attempting to unionize. That same month, Rockstar delayed GTA 6 to its current release date of Nov. 19, commenting that “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.” Rockstar and Take-Two have not publicly commented on the reasons for the GTA 6 delays in more granular detail.
So when can we expect to actually hear more about GTA 6? Despite rampant speculation in recent weeks that Rockstar was about to release a third trailer for the game, Zelnick recently reiterated that marketing for GTA 6 will begin in summer, which technically begins June 21. That means we’ve all got a few more weeks to sit tight.

GTA 6 has become too big for everyone’s own good
No offense to Strauss Zelnick, but if we’re all hanging on his every word, something has gone wrong
