Hunter x Hunter confirms return with new manga volume and chapters

A new Hunter x Hunter volume is going to be released in Japan on July 3, according to publisher Shueisha. The upcoming publishing of volume 39 of the manga is great news for fans of Yoshihiro Togashi’s seminal shonen manga, because it also means that the long-awaited new batch of chapters is going to be dropping soon on Shonen Jump.

Hunter x Hunter began its serialization in March 1998, and to say that it has influenced several generations of the world’s most famous manga would be an understatement. Unfortunately, Togashi’s poor health conditions (he has chronic back pain and reduced mobility) meant that, starting in 2006, the author began taking long breaks from his work. Currently, Hunter x Hunter‘s serialization consists of “drops” of 10 chapters that the author completes all at once, and are released roughly every two years on Weekly Shonen Jump.

Volume 38 of Hunter x Hunter (containing chapters 391-400) was published in Japan in September 2024, and a new batch of 10 chapters (401-410, which will be collected in volume 39) started appearing in Shonen Jump the month after. Editorial strategies may be behind this choice, as Shueisha understandably wants the manga volumes and chapters to benefit from each other’s hype. Volume 37 was released in November 2022, after the newest batch of chapters started appearing in Shonen Jump one month before, in October.

If this strategy remains true, then fans can expect new chapters of Hunter x Hunter to appear this summer. Further confirmation comes from Togashi’s regular updates on his ultra-popular X profile. In April, he confirmed that he had completed inking on chapters up to number 430, and that news on their publication would come from the Jump staff soon.

While Hunter x Hunter may have lost readership due to its long hiatuses, the series remains incredibly popular and beloved by fans. It’s one of the greatest shonen manga of the past 30 years, and seeing it coming back, while learning that the author’s health keeps improving, is always a treat.
