Enjoy 25 minutes of 1v1 The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer action
The original The Last of Us was released in an era where every shooter imaginable, like Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 2 and 3, were getting stuffed with PvP multiplayer modes. Though a very narrative-focused game, The Last of Us launched with a multiplayer mode, and players really took to its unique spin on team deathmatch modes.
The Last of Us Part 2 was originally going to have a multiplayer mode, but that was removed and shifted toward being its own game. That game was never fully revealed to the public, and Naughty Dog stopped working on it in 2023. It was a blow to fans of The Last of Us, but now a modder is trying to lessen that blow.
Creator Speclizer has been developing a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 since January, and on Sunday shared our best look yet at the mod in action. While a little rough around the edges (you’ll occasionally notice frame rate dips and black boxes appearing where their character aims), it still looks pretty great. Speclizer showcases gameplay on a custom in-progress map and one ripped right from The Last of Us Part 2‘s single-player campaign.
Speclizer plans to release his mod in September. He has a series of videos on his channel explaining how he’s been creating the mod if you want more of a peek behind the curtain.
Of course, the mod will only be available for PC players. In a way, they’re lucky The Last of Us Part 2 landed on PC when it did as, moving forward, Sony will no longer bring its single-player titles to Windows PC; they’ll remain PlayStation exclusives.
PlayStation 5 players can instead replay Ellie and Abby’s tumultuous journey or dip their toes in the game’s roguelike mode, No Return, which feels at odds with the game itself.
